Ever wonder what happens when a dreamer won’t let their vision get smaller? That’s Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole’s story—a woman who didn’t just break through barriers, she redefined them. Born in 1936, Dr. Cole began college at only 15. She went from Fisk to Oberlin, and then to Northwestern to earn her Ph.D. in anthropology. Her journey wasn’t just about collecting degrees—it was about finding purpose.

Turning institutions into movementsWhat her story teaches usKey Takeaways

When she joined Spelman College in 1987 as its first Black female president, she didn’t just take a spot at the table—she made it bigger. Under her leadership, Spelman received record-breaking donations, like an $18 million endowment from the DeWitt Wallace/Reader’s Digest Fund, the largest gift ever to an HBCU at that time. But more than just numbers, she inspired Spelman and its students to dream as big as they deserved.

Turning institutions into movements

Leadership is more than just holding a title—it’s about making a difference. Dr. Cole truly embodied this belief. Under her leadership, Spelman College didn’t just rise up the ranks (being named the top regional liberal arts college in the South by U.S. News was a major achievement). It also became a space where young Black women could dream big.

Dr. Cole launched mentorships, community service programs, and an international affairs center—lifelines for students seeking connection and purpose. Her efforts earned national recognition, including the White House Point of Light award. But more importantly, she made students feel seen, heard, and empowered.

After Spelman, she continued her impact—leading Bennett College, directing the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art, and serving on major corporate boards—all while championing diversity and inclusion.

What her story teaches us

Here’s the real takeaway: You don’t have to run a college to lead like Dr. Cole. You just need to care, be present, and believe in progress—even when it seems impossible.

So, what’s your version of bold leadership? Maybe it’s helping someone younger, speaking up in a meeting, or starting that project you’ve delayed. Whatever it is, go for it. Like Dr. Cole once said, “Dream the boldest dream.” Because dreaming is the beginning—but doing makes it real.

You have everything you need to lead your way. And if you doubt that, remember this: Spelman’s story, Dr. Cole’s story—it’s not just history. It’s showing what you can achieve too.

Key Takeaways

Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole’s leadership at Spelman College transformed the school and inspired Black women to aim high and achieve their dreams.

  • Impact: Dr. Cole’s leadership at Spelman College led to impressive accomplishments, including record-breaking donations and national acclaim, which empowered young Black women to chase their dreams.
  • Action: Individuals can lead like Dr. Cole by showing care, staying engaged, and believing in progress even during tough times.
  • Empowerment: By taking bold steps—such as mentoring, launching community service programs, and advocating for diversity and inclusion—one can create a positive impact and inspire others to follow suit.
