When Erica Duignan and Monique Idlett launched Reign Ventures in 2017, they weren’t just starting a fund. They were setting out to change the rules of venture capital. Both women came in with years of business experience, Idlett from the music industry and Duignan from early-stage investing. But they didn’t rely on tradition. Instead, they leaned into their lived experiences as Black women, as mothers, and as professionals who know how to spot real potential.

Backing founders whom others miss

Reign Ventures puts its money where most investors don’t even look. They back early-stage startups led by founders often ignored by the industry, people who are talented, prepared, and ready but just haven’t had the same access. The result? A portfolio filled with companies like Ryze Superfoods and Monica + Andy, brands that mix culture with strong business instincts. Erica and Monique look for more than ideas. They look at how founders handle pressure, how they lead, and whether they want to build a company that lasts.

Mentorship isn’t optional, it’s the standard

Duignan and Idlett don’t just write checks and disappear. They stay close. Founders working with Reign Ventures get real, hands-on support, from how to hire the right people to figuring out how to price products. That level of care comes naturally. As moms of three, they know what it means to juggle, to make hard choices, and to grow something from scratch. They bring that same energy into every partnership.

Representation drives better outcomes

Let’s be clear, this isn’t charity. Reign’s model works. Diverse teams solve problems better. Founders who’ve faced adversity often know how to think fast and lead with purpose. By investing in these leaders, Reign Ventures is proving that inclusion isn’t just the right thing, it’s a smart business move.

Sharing the wins with others

Want to hear from other women doing big things? Check out the “Mompreneurs” podcast hosted by Duignan and Idlett. Every Monday, they feature stories of Black moms building brands, businesses, and legacies, showing listeners what’s possible with vision, grit, and the right support.

Key Takeaways

Erica Duignan and Monique Idlett, founders of Reign Ventures, are transforming venture capital by investing in underrepresented founders and providing extensive mentorship.

  • Impact – Their approach is driving better outcomes by fostering diversity and inclusion, which in turn enhances problem-solving and business performance.
  • Action – Investors should look beyond traditional metrics and support founders who bring unique perspectives and resilience.
  • Empowerment – By actively seeking out and uplifting diverse founders, investors can create more inclusive and innovative ecosystems.
