Building something powerful often begins with a simple idea, along with someone brave enough to take action. That’s exactly what Sherell Yarbough did in Lawrence, Kansas, when she started the Black Business Market. Happening June 14 at the Flory Building, this pop-up event offers something unique: a space where Black entrepreneurs can come, be noticed, and keep all their profits. No vendor fees. No obstacles. Just opportunity.

Contents
Support and empowerment in actionKey Takeaways

Sherell understands the hustle well. Before starting her own business, Sherell’s Custom Treats, she tested her dessert ideas at community pop-ups. That’s where she noticed the magic—not only the earnings but also the confidence it provided her. Now, she’s giving back. From seafood boils to tarot readings and free health checks, this market is full of spirit and hard work. It’s more than just a market—it’s a movement for visibility, ownership, and joy.

Support and empowerment in action

This market wasn’t about competition; it came from a need in the community. Held on the same day as Lawrence’s Juneteenth celebration, the Black Business Market offers locals a place to meet, connect, and celebrate. As Moniqué Mercurio from Douglas County CORE said: “We’re creating what our community needs without asking for permission.”

Even though the timing surprised some, Yarbough’s goal is clear: to provide space for those often ignored in traditional settings. It’s making a difference. By eliminating financial barriers—where other events may charge up to $250 to participate—Sherell’s market serves as a starting point for Black entrepreneurs to grow and succeed.

Here’s what you can do: Show up. Support Black-owned businesses. Shop with purpose. Whether you’re sipping a daiquiri, enjoying a tarot reading, or mingling with others, your presence counts. When we support each other, we create more than just a market—we build a future with room for everyone.

Key Takeaways

Sherell Yarbough’s Black Business Market in Lawrence, Kansas, offers a vendor-free pop-up event to support and empower Black entrepreneurs.

  • Impact – The event helps Black entrepreneurs by eliminating financial barriers and providing a platform for visibility and growth.
  • Action – Attend and support the Black Business Market by shopping for goods and services, and encouraging others to do the same.
  • Empowerment – By participating, the community can build a future that includes more opportunities for Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs.
